The International Workshop on Far-Infrared Technologies (IW-FIRT) has been held eight times in the past from 1999 to 2021. In these workshops, we aimed to discuss the recent development and future directions of far-infrared and terahertz (THz) science and technologies with a special emphasis on high power radiation sources in this frequency region and their applications.

Symposium on Frontier of Terahertz Science (S-FTS) has been held ten times in the past every year from 2014 to 2023 by (i) Division of Terahertz Spectroscopy, Spectroscopical Society of Japan, (ii) Professional Group of Terahertz technology, The Japan Society of Applied Physics; (iii) Technical Committee on Microwave Photonics and Terahertz Photonic-Electronics Technologies, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan, (iv) Terahertz Technology Forum. This Symposium aims to provide a place for researchers from different fields to interact with each other regarding terahertz technology and related technologies, which have been rapidly developing in recent years, and to generate new research that transcends disciplinary boundaries. The S-FTS 2024 will be conducted in Japanese.

We think it is good for our THz and Far-infrared science community to jointly hold the workshop and the symposium with similar missions this year. In the part of IW-FIRT 2024, we pay special attention to “The progress of far-infrared technologies in Asia”.

The workshop and symposium consist of invited talks, oral presentations and a poster session with the following scope of topics:

  • 1) Development of sources, detectors and instrumentations in the THz and far-infrared region;
  • 2) Application of terahertz technologies especially on the following topics:
    • 2-1) THz spectroscopy, sensing and imaging;
    • 2-2) Magnetic and spintronic phenomena in the THz and far-infrared region;
    • 2-3) Material development with high-power THz/FIR sources; and
  • 3) Other subjects related to the THz and far-infrared region.
